What is BGP?
Have you ever wondered how the internet works? I mean, we all know that it's a bunch of networks strung together, but how do those networks know how to communicate with each other. Also, how do those networks know the best path to route traffic through? All that is possible thanks to BGP.
BGP stands for border gateway protocol. As the name suggests, it's the protocol that sits at the edge of each network. It's like the postal carrier for networks. It knows where networks are and how to transfer information to and from them. When data comes through a network and is ready to leave to its next destination, it's BGP that tells that packet where to go next. This all happens behind the scenes and is completely autonomous.
The border gateway protocol needs to be handled with care, though. As resilient as BGP is, misconfigurations of this protocol have been responsible for major internet outages. For example, at one point in 2018, the internet suffered a major outage because a lot of traffic was re-routed to a Chinese post office due to a BGP misconfiguration.
