FAQs

Is the Program Management Professional (PgMP) worth it?

The PgMP is a big time commitment, but it's absolutely worth it for experienced project managers who want to take their careers to the next level. Earning the PgMP sets you apart as a top-tier program manager who can oversee multiple related projects and align them with business goals. Employers know that the PgMP stands for strategic program management skills and knowledge, and earning it can land you promotions and jobs that will otherwise remain shut.

How much does the PgMP cost?

The Program Management Professional (PgMP) from PMI costs $1,000 if you're not already a member of Project Management International, or $800 if you are a member. Since a membership costs $159/year and comes with additional benefits like discounts on events and professional networking connections, it's worth it to become a member before attempting the PgMP exam.

How difficult is the PgMP test? What is the PgMP pass rate?

The PgMP is notoriously difficult, considered by many to be PMI's hardest certification exam. Although they don't publish their failure rates, rumor has it that the PgMP pass rate is in the mid-30% – which means the vast majority of people fail it on their first attempt. It's challenging because it doesn't just test technical knowledge but also deep, strategic understanding of program management. The exam includes a lot of memorization but also demanding practical, high-level problem-solving.

How long does it take to prep for the Program Management Professional?

Although some people claim to understand the PMI test process well enough that they prepared for the PgMP in less than three weeks, the general wisdom is that the PgMP takes at least two or three months to prepare for. Not only do you have to be able to prove a firm grasp of management skills, but you need an excellent grasp of PMI's framework, terminology and expectations. If you can dedicate a few hours of study a day, you can probably prepare for the PgMP in three months.

Who should plan on earning the PgMP?

The PgMP is a benefit to highly experienced project managers who want to start leading complex, multi-project programs that drive strategic goals. It's meant to qualify PMs for senior roles or positions in advanced leadership, especially in industries like tech, finance and government. However, it's probably not the right choice for entry-level managers or PMs who don't have experience with managing multiple interrelated projects. For people with less experience, consider starting with the PMP before moving on to the advanced PgMP.

Who is this for?

This Program Management Professional (PgMP) training is considered professional-level PMI training, which means it was designed for project managers with three to five years of experience with project management.
