How to Perform EIGRP Configuration and EIGRP Troubleshooting FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What exactly is EIGRP and what does it do?

EIGRP stands for Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol. EIGRP is a dynamic routing protocol designed to optimize the transfer and exchange of routing information between routers. EIGRP is often used in enterprise networks including corporate LANs and WANs and medium to large-scale networks because dynamic routing and efficient communication in networks at that scale are crucial. EIGRP relies on features like rapid convergence, load balancing and support for variable-length subnet masking.

What does it mean to perform EIGRP configuration and troubleshooting?

The actual process of configuring EIGRP happens at a command line interface, sometimes directly at the router, and other times using a GUI over a network management software. Applying changes and updates via the CLI provides flexibility and precision in the changes being made. To configure EIGRP, the protocol itself has to be enabled on interfaces, system numbers have to be specified, network addresses must be defined, and more.

What is the difference between BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP?

BGP stands for Border Gateway Protocol: BGP manages routing between autonomous systems primarily with policy-based routing decisions. OSPF stands for Open Shortest Path First: OSPF is an interior gateway protocol that optimizes routing within autonomous systems. EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol) is also an interior routing protocol, but optimized for Cisco devices. The differences between BGP, OSPF and EIGRP lie in the environments they're suited for and the routing they enable.

Who should take this course on EIGRP configuration and troubleshooting?

Network administrators, network engineers, and IT professionals who manage and maintain enterprise networks should consider this course on EIGRP. Especially if you primarily support Cisco networking equipment, or you're considering a new job or promotion that depends on familiarity with advanced Cisco routing configuration skills. Anyone who's involved in advanced network design and implementation will benefit from this course on using EIGRP to ensure optimal network performance and reliability.

Is this EIGRP configuration and troubleshooting course associated with any certifications?

No, this course on EIGRP configuration wasn't developed as certification prep, but that doesn't mean it can't help with some Cisco certifications. This relatively short, skills-focused course emphasizes practical knowledge of how to actually configure and troubleshoot EIGRP on Cisco equipment. That skill is part of what you'll need to know to earn the CCNP Enterprise, or pass its core exam (350-401 ENCOR) as well as many of its concentration exams.
