Why Resource Management is Critical to Effective Project Management
In many ways, resource management is the cornerstone of project management. Project management is the process of leading a team to achieve an objective within a certain timeline and budget. The number of people you have at your disposal, the dollars allocated to the project, and how long until the deadline hits for deliverables are all examples of how project managers exist in a world defined by finite resources.
How well a project manager estimates, acquires, plans, and controls those resources is often the determining factor in whether a project is successful. While resource management is a continual process that occurs at every stage of the project, being able to plan ahead and forecast what resources are needed effectively is where many inexperienced project managers struggle.
It's true that resources are infinitely different: how you manage interpersonal interactions within your team requires a skill set you might not use when working on financial accounting. In many ways, however, resources have a lot of similarities. Being able to identify where those exist and use standardized processes can go a long way toward streamlining your project.
