OSPF Summary
What is the OSPF Network Protocol and How Does It Optimize Network Routing?
The OSPF or Open Shortest Path First is a network protocol designed to optimize how data packets are transmitted within a network. OSPF achieves this optimized data transit through the use of assessing the topology of Autonomous Systems within a network and determining how data packets should route between Autonomous Systems to reach their end target in the most efficient manner possible.
To enable OSPF, Autonomous Systems are designed to maintain a topology map of their distance to neighboring routers within an Autonomous system as well as network status information between these neighboring routers such as congestion, or transmission speeds.
With this sophisticated network topology mapped, OSPF leverages the use of a traversal algorithm that is an iteration of the popular Dijkstra algorithm, that can effectively determine the shortest path based on the provided network topology. In utilizing OSPF, organizations can benefit from transmitting data packets within an Autonomous System with ease in an effective, optimized manner.
