The AAA Framework Explained
Acquiring the CompTia Security+ certificate is recommended for IT professionals. That certificate tells potential employers that they understand the general principles of cybersecurity. One of those principles that the Security+ exam covers is the AAA framework.
The AAA framework is a generalized foundation for network security. Many access control systems follow this framework in some fashion.
The AAA framework stands for authentication, authorization, and accounting.
The authentication piece is when someone proves they are who they say they are when they try and access a network resource. Traditionally this involves a user entering a username and password. Though, the authentication piece has evolved with protocols like OpenID.
The authorization piece checks to verify that the individual who has been authenticated, is also authorized to access a resource, before being provided access.
The last piece of the framework, the accounting piece, is the record-keeping and logging step. This creates a breadcrumb trail for systems administrators to see who logged into their network, why, and when.
