If you're a project manager, you know it's not an easy role. There are a lot of moving pieces and a variety of people to manage. And if you’re working in an Agile environment, the role of a project manager shifts even more. Traditional project management focuses heavily on planning, organizing, and managing tasks and resources.

But in Agile, teams are self-organizing, which means the project manager's role is less about micromanaging and more about enabling success.

What Soft Skills Do Agile Project Managers Need?

During a recent webinar, CBT Nuggets trainer Simona Millham shared several soft skills that every Agile project manager should have in order to be successful. These skills go beyond technical expertise and focus on fostering collaboration, removing roadblocks, and leading teams effectively. You can watch the video here or read on for the top soft skills.

Soft skills matter—here's the information you'll need to be effective:

Issue Resolution/Escalation

One of the key responsibilities of an Agile project manager is to remove roadblocks that prevent the development team from moving forward. These aren’t minor inconveniences—they're real impediments outside the team’s control. Resolving these issues efficiently requires strong networking skills, as the project manager needs to know who to approach for support.

Additionally, conflict resolution plays a role. For example, if a senior leader tries to pull a developer away for another project, the project manager may not have direct authority to stop it, but they can use negotiation, diplomacy, and empathy to advocate for the team’s needs. Active listening and clear communication are essential to navigating these challenges effectively.

Problem-Solving

Agile project managers don’t have all the answers— and they don’t need to. Instead, their role is to help teams solve their own problems by unlocking creativity and fostering collaboration. There are various techniques to facilitate problem-solving, such as:

  • Brainstorming sessions to generate new ideas.

  • Root cause analysis methods like the “Five Whys.”

  • Creative problem-solving frameworks like the “Six Thinking Hats.”

By guiding teams through these approaches, Agile project managers ensure that challenges are tackled efficiently without stalling progress.

Team Building

Agile thrives on strong, collaborative teams. Unlike traditional project management, where tasks are assigned from the top down, Agile teams work together to deliver results. This means that every member must be accountable, engaged, and comfortable working with others.

The Agile project manager plays a crucial role in fostering this environment. Team-building efforts might include:

  • Encouraging open communication and knowledge sharing.

  • Creating a psychologically safe space where team members feel comfortable asking questions and admitting mistakes.

  • Helping teams establish shared standards and hold each other accountable.

  • Recognizing and celebrating team successes.

When teams trust each other and communicate openly, they’re far more effective in delivering high-quality work.

Team Coaching

While Scrum Masters often coach teams on Agile practices, project managers can play a similar role by guiding both teams and stakeholders through the Agile mindset.

For instance, if a customer is unfamiliar with Agile methodologies, the project manager can help them understand the importance of continuous collaboration. Agile emphasizes that business stakeholders and developers should work together daily—not just at the start and end of a project. Coaching helps bridge this gap and ensures that everyone involved understands their role in the Agile process.

Beyond Agile principles, project managers can also coach individuals to shift from a fixed mindset (“I can’t do this”) to a growth mindset (“With effort, I can learn and improve”). Encouraging this mindset fosters resilience and adaptability, both critical for success in Agile environments.

Change Management

Adopting Agile isn’t just about new workflows—it’s a fundamental shift in company culture. Agile project managers play a critical role in facilitating this transformation. Change management involves more than updating processes; it requires influencing people’s mindsets and behaviors.

Project managers need to be prepared to challenge traditional ways of working, even if it means ruffling a few feathers. They must help teams and stakeholders embrace Agile values like collaboration, flexibility, and continuous improvement. Successfully navigating these changes requires persistence, persuasion, and strong leadership.

Creating the Right Environment

Ultimately, an Agile project manager’s job is to create an environment where teams can thrive. This means removing barriers, fostering a culture of trust, and ensuring that individuals feel supported in their work. The best Agile teams operate in environments where:

  • Individuals feel empowered to take ownership of their work.

  • Collaboration and communication are encouraged.

  • Leaders provide guidance without micromanaging.

By focusing on these soft skills, Agile project managers can shift from a traditional command-and-control role to one that supports, enables, and empowers their teams.
