VMware continues to lead the industry for virtualization solutions and certifications. Its certifications are in high demand among employers and learners alike. But like most vendors and organizations offering IT certifications, VMware recently announced that the prices for their certification exams are increasing. Effective April 1, 2017, VMware will increase the fees associated with their VCA, VCP, VCAP, and VCDX exams.

The exam pricing changes should come as no surprise to IT pros familiar with certification testing and the pricing patterns that most vendors and certification organizations tend to follow. VMware's pricing structure has remained reliably consistent over the past three years, and current exam fees will be honored through March 31, 2017. Exam vouchers purchased on or after April 1 will be subject to the new pricing structure.

For the most part, the changes are moderate and bring VMware into alignment with industry standards for pricing — for the most part.

Here's a breakdown of the current exam fees and the soon-to-be fees:

Exam

Current Fee

New Fee (as of April 1) A

VMware Certified Associate (VCA) and vSphere Foundations (online, non-proctored)

$120

$125

VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

$225

$250

VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)

$400

$450

VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX)

$1,200 (made up of a $300 application fee and a $900 defense fee)

$3,995 (made up of a $995 application fee and a $3,000 defense fee)

If you're anything like us, you probably did a double-take at the price spike associated with the VCDX certification. The price tag on that certification more than tripled! If there's a bright side to an increase like that, it's probably that there are only a handful of people worldwide who have earned the VCDX, which means the rest of us get to deal with much more reasonable fee increases.

And VMware claims they're going to put the increased fees to good use, saying "these price changes allow us to reinvest and drive industry recognition of the value that VMware Certified employees at all levels bring to their organizations."
